Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan (NHMP)
As part of the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 (DMA2000), municipalities are now required to have a “Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan” to be eligible for federal funding to prepare for future storms. In 2006, in response to this mandate by the Federal Government, our local Planning Agency, CRERPA, developed a Regional Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan for the nine towns. An update to the plan is required every five years, and in light of the recent natural hazards we have experienced, it was recommended that each town adopt their own plan in order to customize the plans for specific events and locations.
With the help of the Lower CT River Valley Council of Governments (RiverCOG), the Town of Old Lyme is working on the Plan update. One of the most important aspects of this update is feedback from residents prior to submitting the plan to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for approval. In an effort to solicit as much input as possible, the draft plan is now posted on the Town website, along with a Timeline and explanation of the process, a survey for residents, and agendas and minutes from the NHMP Committee meetings.
Please take a few minutes to participate in the survey, which should take 10 minutes or less, read through the draft plan, and submit questions if you have any.
The NHMP Committee is also planning a Public Information Meeting to be held on Saturday, Mar. 8, 2014 at 10:00 AM in the Meeting Hall of Town Hall. Please join us for a quick overview of the Plan and the opportunity to ask questions and offer input in person.
